Our theoretical framework for studying trust is based on the social capital theory. Social capital is defined as the features of social organization, such as trust, networks and norms that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutual benefit. Trust is a—probably the—main component of social capital, and social capital is a necessary condition of social integration, economic efficiency, and democratic stability (Arrow, 1972: 357; Coleman, 1988: 306; Ostrom, 1990; of trust and social capital and presents tw o dif ferent perspectives on the relationship . between them, namely whether trust is a precondition or a product of social capita l. being, and plays a central role in research on social capital and trust. The next section outlines our analytic framework.
